Welcome to the first post of the blog series "Payneless in Social Work!"
Before I begin this week's post, I want to preface it by saying that this blog is for educational and edutainment purposes only. The contents of this blog are my intellectual property and are copyright protected. Okay, now that we've gotten the formalities out of the way, let's get right into it, shall we?
So you want to be a social worker?
According to a CSWE (2023) survey, there were 56,709 social work students enrolled in BSW programs out of the 479 programs that participated in the study, and 83,610 MSW students enrolled in MSW programs out of the 303 programs that participated in the study.
There are more individuals interested in social work now more than ever; and if that's you, then you've come to the right place. Whether you're a current social work student or interested in entering the field, there are some things that you should be aware of and consider. First, no matter what you have been told or shown about the social work profession, you should know that maintaining your integrity is a priority. Second, you should know that all social workers are not the same (we'll discuss this at a later date). Third, you need to consider why you'd like to be a social worker.
I have been a social worker for ten years, and honestly, social work was not my first choice. Initially, I wanted to become a veterinarian, then a psychologist, a teacher, a counselor, and finally, a social worker. I chose to pursue a degree in social work to explore the multitude of career options available in the field. Looking back, I can say that I had no idea what I was in for, while also saying it was the best profession I could have chosen.
As a social worker and social work career coach, I must tell you that social work has its ups and downs. However, ultimately, social work is what you make of it. You must have a "why" when choosing to enter this field, and once you have that, you can push forward to become a great social worker.
